Halloween

31 10 2007

I have found the perfect antidote for pesky trick or treaters, I simply let the dog out, having firstly ensured she has got a good run of speed up as she exits the front door.

Cue children scattering in panic as a flying ball of fur, legs and noise exits the front door at mach 2.

I shall enjoy tonight :)

Danny Baker - A Radio Genius

31 10 2007

There are not enough superlatives to describe the wit and talent of this man.  It would seem that the Sony Radio Awards panel agree with me.

He used to present the breakfast show on BBC London, took some time off after winning the Sony Awards DJ of the Year and then returned at the much more sociable timeslot of 3-5pm. His show is a mix of music, abstract conversation and phone in show. No where else do you get such an eclectic mix of music and chatter.

For those unfamiliar with his work, he is a well known radio presenter, having been heard over Five Live, Virgin, Radio 1, Talk Radio and BBC London. His wide and varied TV work has included writing TFI Friday as well as appearances on Have I Got News For You and Room 101.

I  heartily recommend that you check out his show - www.bbc.co.uk/london/radio/presenters/danny_baker/index.html

He remains to this day, the sole reason I would consider moving back to London for.

Three days, a commission, six meetings and far too much German beer

29 10 2007

This was a half written post that has been sat in my dashboard for a couple of weeks, interestingly I still cannot drink much at present as a result of the activities of this weekend.

I’m back after my very short notice trip to Germany.

I had been planning to meet with a number of race car manufacturers in order to look at what deal I could do to get hold of car to run in Germany next year. On Tuesday it looked like it wasn’t going to happen as I couldn’t tie anyone down to a meeting (there was a race on this weekend meaning most people I needed to see were in roughly the same area). However on Wednesday afternoon it all came together in the usual haphazard fashion. It was too late to get the dog into a kennel so I asked the dog walker I use to help me out and on Thursday afternoon I headed to Germany by car via France, Belgium, and the Netherlands .

On the Thursday night we arrived at the big Army base near the Rhine in Germany. We were staying in officers quarters there and I found that I had been promoted from a civvy to a Major. I have kept the receipt from checkout the next morning to confirm my newly acquired status!

We arrived at the Nurburgring on Friday morning to find that the track was closed for manufacturer testing. So we went to various vantage points to watch the much rumoured Audi R8 V10 power round the track, followed by an assortment of other rather tasty cars that we should expect to see being launched over the next 12 months.

My first meeting was in the afternoon and then until 8pm I met a whole series of race teams. A number of things struck me, aside from one common piece of advice about the car I was hoping to run, everybody had a completely different opinion on what I should do and I mean absolutely everybody. With the Friday meetings concluded it was time for a beer and something to eat. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and the fact that we then stopped drinking at 4.30am when the five of us that were out had all run out of money was a very bad thing.

A large part of Saturday was therefore written off on the basis that we felt like we were dead. Having then managed to get out in the afternoon, it was time to get back to the hotel for the rugby (semi final). At this point I realised I couldn’t drink, so for the first time ever watched a major rugby game drinking just coke.

On the Sunday I met two more teams and a group of race instructors before heading back for a ferry at stupid o’clock on Monday morning. I’ve now spent the past couple of weeks working through all the information and formalising just what we will do next year. A number of things became apparent over the trip, firstly everybody had a car that I should buy as it would be the best suited to what we wanted to do and secondly I really am going to need to learn to speak German.

Changing weather

26 10 2007

I have noticed this week that the weather has changed very slightly. In the mornings the air feels damper than it did a week ago. How do I know this? Well quite simply I am waking up earlier in the morning because my knee is hurting me due to the dampness. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to get out of bed after I gently coax some life into the ageing joint.

It is like I have magically aged 30 years in a week. Once I’m up and about I’m okay, but it is the getting up and about part that is challenging at present!
